I suppose I should have addressed this at the get go. But, if you are reading this (yes, the three of you), you probably know the basics anyway. For those of you who don’t, what are you doing here? Seriously.
Not that I mind the company….
The quick one sentence summary would be that halal is sort of like kosher for Muslims. Sort of. There are some differences. So broadly speaking its no pork (or variants thereof), no alcohol, eating of dead animals and the like.
Also if I remember correctly the idea of slaughtering the animal to let the blood drain out reduces blood clotting and therefore the probability of disease. Though I may be making this up.
Mostly in the US, since animal feed consists of well, animals, soon to be juicy halal burgers, lamb chops and chicken tandoori are reared on a a grass fed natural diet. So that makes them organic, expensive and delicious!
Please note that this is my personal, probably error-ridden understanding of the whole halal issue , which is limited at best. So do a little leg work before you believe everything you read online!
Hey, I think you should take your Halal a bit more seriously, especially if you are one of the people who is meant to be eating it! 🙂 I hear there are 3 million muslims in California!!
This is a big, huge issue and we want the consumers to force it into the mainstream food industry for the benefit of all the Muslims who have been forced to eat Kosher because of the lack of Halal.
Halal Focus Team
Hello Halal Focus team,
And thanks for your thoughts. Don’t worry, despite my playful banter I can assure you, I take eating halal pretty seriously.
This post is meant as basics on halal for a non-halal eating audience.
Trust me, the restaurants I review are all halal. And because Masha’Allah there is a huge Muslim community in CA all the Muslims are spoilt for choice.
Best,
A musing muslim
