Ever since we heard about Euro Grill serving up halal Bosnian food, TBH and I have been plotting a trip to get there. We planned some degree of working up an appetite beforehand so we could indulge in what we assumed would be hearty meaty options and halalelujah Euro Grill doesn’t disappoint.

So the last time we had a leisurely two hour meal at a restaurant along with friends was maybe in 2009.  Pre-arrival era of the pint-sized food critic. Our modus operandi post PFC has been order-eat-get out, preferably in that order. So far our shortest sprint has been about 20 minutes door to door. We progressed from eat while he sleeps mode, to entertain him with shiny objects while we eat mode, to tag team while one of us eats mode  which steadily climbed to an easy one hour meal in the post the-device-that-cannot-be-named era. Although his device of distraction is fairly old school, and not the shiny inedible fruit version – for now.

Last weekend in our quest for dinner, we stumbled upon a wonderful little restaurant in downtown San Carlos. I knew it was going to be a promising experience since
a) it was hard to find
b) we were received by the owner/chef/artist as if we were long lost friends
c) the décor was quaint enough to be cute but the haphazard enough to make me feel that the focus was on the food.

What makes a good desi restaurant? Here’s a little insider tip. (Little because I’m five foot four and insider because I’m desi.) Look for the vital stats: strip mall, self service and dining desis. They are all good signs. It means that the focus is on the food.

And speaking of food, the promise of melt-in-your mouth kababs (so swore a friend) and a trip to the South Bay saw us face to face with Shan restaurant. Strip mall? Check. Self service? Check. Dining desis? Check. Check. Check.

The décor is geared towards atmospherelessness so its tables, chairs and television. Let me rephrase that tables, chairs and Pakistani soap operas. Sitting within eavesdropping distance of the other tables and strategically placed in front of the TV, my elephant ears were all ready to wiggle and waggle but first to matters at hand. Khana.
